Bird Island Station Webcam Archive

The Bird Island webcam is situated in the office window of Prince House, the living/accomodation building on Bird Island. It usually points South West, towards Molly Hill and Tonk. The generator shed and the jetty can be seen in the foreground. It is updated every hour, but the blind is closed at dusk so no image will be seen after dark. This prevents night-flying birds that are attracted to the light from hitting the windows.

In summer, the beach in the foreground is a busy Antarctic fur seal breeding colony, in winter it is sometimes visited by leopard seals, and in spring by large male elephant seals. Gentoo penguins can be seen at any time. Dense fog can sometimes make the image rather disappointing, but our constantly changing wildlife and seasons means the camera is of interest all year round.
