The match was played at Girton College against a Girton village cricket club XI. This was a hastily arranged game played to the usual friendly format (2 overs each bowler and batsmen retire on 25). Having lost the toss we were inserted to bat and scored a commendable 122 for 9. This was especially impressive as notable bats, Simon and Bruce were demoted down the order. Plenty of good partnerships developed with good contributions from our dynamic middle order duo, Messrs. Staniland and Belchier, the latter sharing the batting honours with Rob Hibbins, each smiting an unbeaten 25. All this topped off with a biffed 6 from Bruce at the close which disappeared into the inevitable nettle patch behind mid-Wicket.

So Girton were set an honest total. Then without drama BAS set about dismantling the opposition batting. This was an impressive display of both bowling and fielding. Everything we did was good and BAS can be rightly proud of their win. Terrific bowling from just about everybody, but especially Steve whose radar was spot in spite of a recent trip to hospital to remove part of his kitchen ceiling from one eye. The ground work was enthusiastic and effective and Jon held a great catch in the covers so that by the close Girton could not manage the total required.

In fairness Girton contributed both Chris Roger, who cheered on by his family on the bench almost stole the show for BAS with both bat and ball, and young Andrew who turned out be a very tidy bowler. Mind you Girton were able to field both a Hobbs and a Knott so that we wondered for a time if we were facing a "sons of famous cricketers first XI".
