At last some good news! The BAS team finally won a League game for the first time in 13 months, which was a thoroughly deserved if close run encounter with our old rivals British Gas. Batting first, BAS attained the dizzy heights of 145 for 4, with substantial contributions from Clilverd (50), Denby and Staniland. Good running throughout and some impressive improvisation from Iain purveyor-of-the-leg-glide Staniland ensured a sizeable total.
In reply Gas made a good start with 2 left handers at the crease. Anyone standing in the keepers quadrant on the leg side had their work cut out with the off-side fielders made more or less redundant. Some tenacious bowling by our opening pair, Hibbins and Denby, brought a brace of deserved wickets and so the pressure began to build up on the side batting. This was backed up by excellent fielding with a special mention here for Simon the-ball-keeps-following-me Brockington on debut.
Star of the show without question was Mark Clilverd, who quaffed the MOM award at the Castle afterwards. In addition to his half century when batting, Mark also took a fifer when bowling, not to mention a crucial catch on the boundary. This was matched by a stunning catch held by Bruce in the gathering gloom which effectively ended Gas's resistance. The bowler on each occasion was Alan Rodger, who teased the middle order into eventual submission with 2 wickets and a run out.
