BAS v GLOBE June 2nd, 2004

BAS won toss and elected to field

We enjoyed / endured (delete as appropriate) our first League game of the season V's The Globe CC at Girton Recreation Ground and we were roundly spanked.

The short boundaries came into play with their batsmen in particular finding the nettles, shrubbery and field beyond with increasing regularity. Making inroads into the less appealing bits of vegetation proved almost as fruitless as chasing down their total of 235 runs (a record score against us we believe). But we did benefit from a couple of tidy wickets and the best of the sunshine when fielding whilst everyone who wanted to had an opportunity to bowl (I hope).

With a seemingly inexhaustible supply of cricket balls at their disposal, The Globe eventually took to the field and kept our batting on a tight reign during the opening exchanges. Some good hitting meant we at least posted a respectable total, thoughtfully avoiding the ball hungry mid-wicket foliage whenever possible. However lingering hopes of a late recovery where eventually extinguished when batting at one end became even more challenging with the setting sun virtually obliterating the bowler.

Happily all those who declined to bowl were invited to bat up the order and so everyone had a bit of fun. To their credit our opponents also entered into the spirit of the game. Thanks to all, not least our 2 debutantes, Liz Thomas and David Pond.

Humble apologies from the captain for confusing Liz for most of the match by calling her Sarah.
