As BAS were unable to summon up any of their expert women cricketers
last night and the men were all exhausted after the World Cup, Dirk was left with a team of 3 for the BAS v MCC rematch! Not to be deterred, he threw the usual rules in the bin and came up with an interesting "every man for himself" competition where:- Everyone batted for 2 x 8-ball overs and 10 points were deducted every
time they got out.- Everyone (except the wicket keeper - Gareth 'it's my 40th birthday'
Chisham) also bowled for 2 overs and were awarded 10 points each time they took a wicket, but lost points for runs conceded.- The wicket keeper batted but did not bowl, and conceded points for
byes.Following some complicated calculations (thanks to Jane Fenton & Gina
Pfaff for assisting with the scoring!), first place was awarded to Matt 'Flash'em' Fashem, who scored 27 runs (with a little help from a few wides courtesy of Yves 'Nadal' de Soye!), losing 10 points for being bowled but gaining 30 for taking 3 wickets (with points deducted here & there for runs conceded and extras).BirdLife made a good showing, with Chris Mills and Mike Crosby taking
2nd and 3rd places. We hope this wasn't Chris' last showing for BirdLife as he's leaving us soon - sniff. The booby prize went to Stephen 'carry on regardless' Grady, JNCC, who,
despite being run out twice, bowled and awarded LBW, scored 16 runs. He took 2 wickets and, in my book, was man of the match for an amazing diving catch for which the bowler was lucky to be awarded 10 points!Graham Pfaff rose to the challenge of the new rules with some excellent
umpiring (were those arm waves all signals to the scorer or was he doing the YMCA dance?). Special thanks go once again to Dirk Briggs, Chris Magin and Stephen Grady for hassling people (with varying degrees of success) to play - don't give up, guys! The final scores were (batting + bowling = total)
Matt Fashem 17 + 11 = 28
Chris Mills 19 + 2 = 21
Mike Crosby 13 + 7 = 20
Rob Brett 5 + 14 = 19
Paul Roper-Gee 13 + 4 = 17
Evan Bowen-Jones 19 + -13 = 6
Gareth Chisham (wk) 12 + -15 = -3
Chris Magin 13 + -20 = -7
Rob Pople 16 + -25 = -9
Dirk Briggs 11 + -25 = -14
Yves de Soye -7 + -15 = -22
Nick Folkard -3 + -23 = -26
Stephen Grady -24 + -5 = -29
Michael McDonald frightened everyone with his bowling but didn't stay to
bat.
